Some people dress up to fly but I’d rather be comfortable. I wear sweatpants. I’ve travelled a lot for work and pleasure and I try to choose what I wear very carefully. My approach to travelling is constantly evolving but here’s what I’ve settled on for now.

Underwear

I almost exclusively wear sports socks and boxers because they’re comfortable and keep me cool. These boxer briefs from Adidas are lightweight and fit great. Same goes for their socks.

Shoes

I wear trainers (sneakers) to travel. They’re comfortable and durable, and it’s easy to find a pair that suits your style. My go-tos are a pair of black Adidas ZX Flux. They’re lightweight and I love the way they look. I have wide feet and Adidas shoes always used to be too narrow, but the Flux seem to run a little wider. Recently these Nike Air Max Modern Flyknit have caught my eye. I might pick up a pair to wear on my next trip.

Trainers are great for wandering through airports and exploring a city, but for a long flight I prefer something even lighter that I can slip off to sleep, and slip on for trips to the bathroom. These H&M espadrilles are perfect. They’re light and comfortable and the upper collapses so they take up almost no space in my carry-on. I usually change out of my sneakers and into these while waiting to board or at my seat. I usually change back sometime before landing.

Trousers

Wearing sweatpants anywhere but the gym would have been unthinkable not too long ago. These days it’s fairly common, which is great because they’re ideal for travel. Sportswear companies are making bigger and bigger forays into everyday wear and it’s easy to find athletic apparel that’s functional and fashionable. I love these Nike Advance 15 Joggers. They look and feel great, and have zip pockets which for me are essential when travelling.

On Top

I wear a plain dark Adidas Prime t-shirt. It’s soft and keeps me cool and dry. On top of that I wear a lightweight hoodie also from the Adidas Prime range. Hoodies are great for travel. They’re easy to slip on and off even while sitting in a cramped economy seat and you can zip them up and put the hood up to stay warm. The temperature on planes varies a lot so it’s great to be able to layer like this. The hoodie also has zip pockets which are great for stashing your passport while waiting to board or standing in line for immigration.

Summary

Most of the clothes I’ve listed above are sportswear, but I think they’re just as suited to travel. They’re comfortable which is great for hours spent on a plane or waiting for a connecting flight. They’re also designed to keep you cool and travelling can be something of a workout.
