A Few of my Favourite Things from 2017
Here are the things I enjoyed most in 2017, although some of them were released long before then. One even came out in 1982…

A Chess Novice Challenged Magnus Carlsen. He Had One Month to Train→
Nov 24, 2017 ∞Fascinating piece. It’s behind a paywall but try to find a way to read it. Max Deutsch has been challenging himself to master one expert-level skill every month for a year, starting in November 2016.
Max, a self-diagnosed obsessive learner, wanted his goals to be so lofty that he would fail to reach some. At that, he failed. Max was 11-for-11.
His final challenge? Defeat world-champion Magnus Carlsen at a game of chess.

The Race to Save Coffee→
Oct 19, 2017 ∞Climate change could spell disaster for coffee, a crop that requires specific temperatures to flourish and that is highly sensitive to a range of pests. So scientists are racing to develop more tenacious strains of one of the world’s most beloved beverages.

Containers→
Mar 31, 2017 ∞I’m enjoying this podcast about shipping containers more than I would have expected to. Given its ubiquity, I was surprised to learn just how recently containerization was developed. This podcast describes the shift from breakbulk cargo where everything is just loaded individually, to container shipping. I’d never considered the implications of that shift but Containers makes it clear how significant it was. It’s basically the backbone of the modern global economy.

My Travel Outfit
Some people dress up to fly but I’d rather be comfortable. I wear sweatpants. I’ve travelled a lot for work and pleasure and I try to choose what I wear very carefully. My approach to travelling is constantly evolving but here’s what I’ve settled on for now.

Ronaldo at 40→
Sep 19, 2016 ∞Even before Cristiano, there were two Ronaldos: the one that returned after long-term injury in 2002 was a great goalscorer, but the 1990s version was a great everything.
Rob Smyth on the original Ronaldo. The first superstar I can remember.

Even Roger Federer Gets Old→
Aug 31, 2016 ∞But then: He turned a little to one side — a movement he’d later tell the news outlets that he must have performed a million times in his life — whereupon a wrinkle of un-Federer-like concern appeared in the gap between his eyebrows. What was that noise? Click.

Soccer's Ultimate Con Man→
Aug 29, 2016 ∞Many of Kaiser’s contracts would only last for three to six months, and upon signing would state that he needed time to regain his fitness, buying himself a month or two to collect a paycheck without having to play.

Getting Started
CSS is hard. There are probably dozens of conflicts or examples of bad practice in the CSS and html for this site, but it works for me, for now.
It’s 2016 and I didn’t have a personal website until this week. I call myself a programmer.
This one is hosted on Digital Ocean, and powered by Jekyll. The theme was Minima, but I’ve jimmied around with it and now it’s something else.
